Was Imperialism more Positive or Negative on the Igbo People?

Was the arrival of Europeans in Umuofia more positive or more negative for the Igbo people?  Please choose a side, and provide ONE example from the text that supports your reasoning.

In my opinion the arrival of Europeans in Umuofia was more positive for the Igbo people because; first of all it gave the Igbo people a chance for change and in a way they didn’t fight it. The white man arrived, and they left him on his own, didn’t kill him, or harm him.

I also think that before the English arrived, the women were treated extremely badly and in my opinion that is completely unacceptable. “Without further argument Okonkwo gave her a sound beating and left her and her only daughter weeping.” (Achebe, 38)

In a way it was a good thing that the English came and taught the Igbo people English. Although it replaced the peoples traditional language, it helps them today as English, is the most spoken language in the world.

The poor people of the village were also helped by the missionaries and the churches. The people of the church took them in if they shaved off there hair. “These outcasts, or osu, seeing that the new religion welcomed twins and such abominations thought it was possible that they would also be received. And so one Sunday two of them went into the church.” … “He ordered the outcasts to shave off their long, tangled hair.” (Achebe,157).

Therefore I think that these positives outweigh the negative things that were brought to the clan with the arrival of the British.
